Card text
Cumulative upkeep (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.) When this creature leaves the battlefield, you gain life equal to the number of age counters on it.
"I felt unworthy even to dream of it." —Hanna, *Weatherlight* navigator

If you choose not to pay Revered Unicorn’s cumulative upkeep, it will still get an age counter before being sacrificed, which impacts the amount of life you gain.
Revered Unicorn’s leaves-the-battlefield ability triggers no matter how it leaves the battlefield, not just when you don’t pay its cumulative upkeep.
